5 Tips to Speed Up Your Laptop

Laptops are something that have kind of become our professional and personal backbones. It is understandably frustrating when they start to lose speed and efficiency.

But like every other relationship, your laptop also requires love, care, and maintenance.

Let's dive into 5 tips that can increase the speed of your laptop.

One of the primary reasons for slow laptops is not enough memory. Usually, there are two kinds of memory, i.e., RAM (Random Access Memory) and HDD (Hard Disk Drive). RAM is the fastest memory but is temporary or volatile. Meaning, till the time you're working on your laptop, your data is being written, read, and stored through RAM, but as you switch it off, the data vanishes. Hence, it cannot store permanent data. For that, we use HDD. It is a physical electromagnetic device fitted inside your laptop, which has rotating platters that store and retrieve the permanent data. These are slower and access data randomly. So, increasing your RAM (32 or 64 GB or more), depending upon your work, will increase the speed of your laptop.

Solid State Drive (SSD)

The new generation of laptops have started to switch from HDDs to SSDs. An SSD uses a flash-based memory, which makes accessing the data up to 6 times faster than a traditional HDD. You can get a suitable SSD installed as per your laptop's make and model. A typical range of SSD capacity is from 120 GB to 30.42 TB.

Earlier, it was mentioned that permanent data is stored in HDDs and is accessed randomly. Defragmenting the hard drive organizes the stored data, making data access easier, resulting in improved speed and performance. It is a lengthy process. Nowadays, laptops are equipped with automatic disk defragmenters. All you have to do is to run the program on your laptop.

Disk Cleanup

Cleaning up your hard disk can dramatically improve the speed of your laptop. It deletes all the files that are no longer necessary and also empties the recycle bin. Usually, the C Drive of a laptop is cleaned. Go to My Computer or This PC, and right-click on the C Drive. A dialog box will open that will show how much free space is left on the drive. If it's less than 20%, do a disk clean-up immediately by clicking on the Disk Cleanup option.

Keeping too many tabs open on single or multiple browsers can also impact the speed of a laptop. Be mindful about closing unnecessary tabs and browsers to reduce the load on your laptop's RAM and processing power.

So, there you have it. These useful tips will help, make your laptops faster and your lives easier
